Asa Butterfields Space Between Us Release Date Moved to Next Year to Avoid Rogue O

STX Entertainment has moved its sci-fi adventure “The Space Between Us” back seven weeks from Dec. 16 — when it would have opened against Disney’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” — to Feb. 3.

Asa Butterfield stars as a 16-year-old who has grown up on Mars as the child of an astronaut. While searching for clues about the home planet he’s never known, he begins an online friendship with a street-smart girl, played by Britt Robertson. When he finally gets a chance to return to Earth, scientists discover that his organs can’t withstand Earth’s atmosphere.

Gary Oldman and Carla Gugino also star. Peter Chelsom directs from a screenplay by Allan Loeb, based on a story by Stewart Schill, Richard Barton Lewis, and Loeb. Lewis in the producer.

“The Space Between Us” has secured a release slot for China with the launch expected in late January or early February.

Will Smith’s drama “Collateral Beauty” is now the only wide release that will open against “Rogue One,” the first “Star Wars” spinoff. “The Space Between Us” had originally been set to debut on Dec. 21, along with “Passengers,” “Sing,” and “Assassin’s Creed.”

Feb. 3, two days before the Super Bowl, will also see the launches of Open Road’s “Collide,” an untitled Blumhouse movie, and two Paramount titles — the horror-thriller “Rings” and the faith-based drama “Same Kind of Different as Me.”
